A Dental Bridge Might Be Needed to Replace a Severely Compromised Tooth

Posted .

There are some rare instances when a tooth has been so badly compromised by dental trauma or an untreated cavity that Dr. Rakhi Jani cannot viably treat it with endodontic therapy. In a case this severe, she might recommend a complete dental extraction.

After removing all remnants of the tooth from the socket Dr. Rakhi Jani will suture your gums. Then she will likely provide you with a prescription for any necessary pain medication or antibiotics to help speed the recovery process and minimize discomfort.

After your periodontal tissues have fully healed Dr. Rakhi Jani can start the process of restoring the tooth with a dental bridge. This is an artificial replica tooth fused into one solid piece of dental work. It has open dental crowns on each end that will eventually be anchored onto abutments formed out of the healthy core of the two closest teeth.

Dr. Rakhi Jani will prepare the two abutments by using a drill to remove the tooth enamel layer from each of the neighboring teeth. This will leave behind two small pillars of dentin that protect the sensitive tissues in the teeth.

Dr. Rakhi Jani will create an impression of the area including the related teeth in your bite pattern. Dental lab technicians will eventually use this information to create your dental bridge.

You will need to return to Dr. Rakhi Jani’s dental office to have the dental bridge cemented onto the abutments. This will fully restore the missing tooth for many years ahead.

If you live in the Livermore, California, area and you have a severely compromised tooth, you should call 925.344.5757 to have it treated at Smiles Unlimited.
